Makeup and beauty blog Monday Poll, Vol. 629

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. would you rather wear the same eye makeup each day for the rest of your life or the same lipstick?

Yeegh… I gotta change my eye makeup, so I’d go with same lipstick. Of course, neither choice seems particularly appetizing… It would definitely have to be a nude shade like MAC velvet Teddy, and even though I wear nude lippies a lot, I’m pretty sure I’d be over it after about a month, HA HA HA!

2. pick one for your brows: threading, waxing or tweezing?

Tweezing.

3. messy bun or Chapstick?

Messy bun, please.

4. fake lashes or contour?

Sigh… Neither? but if I had to pick one, then I’ll take the fake lashes, but they’d have to look natural.

5. nail file, face mask or tweezers?

My pirate mustache and I will take the tweezers please!

6. I like to put on my makeup with…brushes, sponges or fingers?

Brushes and fingers, because brushes are easier to wash than sponges, and fingers are just straight-up convenient! I rarely use sponges these days.

7. would you rather fill in your brows or do winged liner?

Tough choice, but I’ll go with winged liner. As long as my brows are plucked and trimmed, I can get away with not filling them in.

8. how typically do you wash your hair?

Every day when I exercise, because I don’t like feeling like my scalp is greasy when I go to sleep. Also, I have pretty bad allergies, so I like to wash all of the pollen out of my hair before I hit the haaaaaay!

9. Are you good at braiding other people’s hair?

I’m acceptable if I’m just doing a simple three-strand braid or a fish tail, but anything more complicated than that, like french braids, dutch braids or braid crowns, then nope.

10. have you been productive during the shelter-in-place?

I haven’t completed any big projects lately, and I’m in awe of people who’ve done things like learn another language, organize their garage, and Kon Mari their closets, because all I’ve been able to do is keep the ship from sinking. The day-to-day stuff has kept me busy, so in that way I think I’ve been productive… I juggle being Connor’s preschool teacher, with being our family’s full-time cook, part-time blogger, and I also provide janitorial services. I’m definitely not bored! It’s all I can do to keep the ship afloat.

Hi, my friend. As I’m sure you’re aware, since you’re most likely living it as well as seeing it like I am, there’s a fantastic offer of uncertainty as well as unrest around us in the world right now. Every day, I try to do something to brighten the world around me a little. sometimes it’s nothing. perhaps one additional smile or a compliment to a neighbor, however I feel like every gesture provides a bit nudge in a positive direction.

10-Minute makeup Must-Haves: Kosas tinted face Oil

got 30 seconds?
The 10-Minute makeup Must-Haves series shows off some of *the best* makeup for quick (but sensational!) skin, eyes, cheeks and lips.

Shake, shake, shake! Dot, dot, dot! Blend, blend, blend!

No, these are not the steps to the current dance craze ? all the kids are doing. They’re what I do whenever I use Kosas tinted face Oil ($42 for a 1-oz. bottle).

I’m into quick makeup at the moment, and this tinted face oil, which has a thin, somewhat runny consistency, is a minimalist’s dream come true.

Have you ever used MAC face & Body? It feels just like that. Sorta slippery, sorta “melty.”

Left: no foundation. Middle: wearing the shade Tone 06. Right: With all the other bells and whistles.
I dab a few drops on my face, blend it with fingers, and 30 seconds later — BOOP! — my skin’s fresh and dewy-looking, my pores look smoother, and the pigmented patches on my cheeks, along with the red areas around my nose, have disappeared. My skin looks naturally even and juuust disguised enough — no fake-looking mannequin skin. If you’re into “skin that looks like skin,” you’ll be into it.

I wear Tone 6, which is the match for NC42 skin.

At first, Tone 06, the shade I wear, seems too light for my NC42 skin, but it works once I blend it in. (Weird!)

A few things of note:

Skip silicon-based face primers, because I don’t think they work well with this product (it’ll ball up on top).

Proceed with caution if your skin’s excessively dry (like mine is immediately after an intense period of retinol). enjoy out! — because tinted face Oil can emphasize flakes.

Be mindful of this product’s limited flexibility, considering that it doesn’t layer well (so you can’t build it up if you’re longing for additional coverage).

If sheer, natural-looking skin is what you seek, that’s what you’ll find with Kosas tinted face Oil.

MAC Nordstrom Naturals, for sure.

There’s something about Stila Beso. I believe it’s just magical, however not only on me. On everyone.

3. Something you’d like however don’t necessarily need?

Seriously, I would absolutely like a idea 2 rower! Or a Volvo SUV. If either shown up on my doorstep, I would not be mad about it.

4. have you ever won any type of money?

Small potatoes, however yeah, a unexpected number of times while gambling on slot machines. I’ve likewise occurred to be with people who insurance claim to never ever win anything, however they’ve won while I was around. I’ve been told that I’m a lucky charm, however I don’t know!

5. quick — name one of the very first pieces of makeup you ever fell in like with.

MAC Spite Lipglass got me with my early twenties. We had a great deal of fun together!

6. French manicure: indeed or no?

On other people, sure, however on me, no. I like my nails very short, as well as I feel like French manicures look much better on longer fingernails.

7. Sparkling or flat water?

I like flat water, however lately I’ve been all about sparkling since my tummy has been crazy anxious lately! Bubbly water seems to assist calm it down, as well as I’m deeply addicted to La Croix (once again).

8. timid or outgoing?

Mostly outgoing…but sometimes shy.

9. Pumpkin pie or apple pie?

Apple pie, served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream please. This, of course, is presuming that the pie has a bomb-@ss — did I truly just hyphenate that? — crust. It has to be flaky, buttery as well as tender; otherwise, I’ll have absolutely nothing to finish with it.

I’m picky about pie, man.

Beauty Products: What things Do You purchase the Most?

MWHAHAHAHAHA
1. Black hair ties

I am forever purchasing new packs of black hair ties to replace the ones that disappear into the black hole of charm products. When I try really hard not to lose them, I might go five, maybe six months, without purchasing a new pack.

Typically, though, I’m grabbing a fresh one every three or four months. I’ve given in to the reality of not being able to keep them. In the words of the Mandolorian, “This is the way.”

2. Hair Conditioner

OMG, so much conditioner! remember how in the ’80s and ’90s how the directions on conditioner bottles would say something along the lines of working a quarter-size dollop into your hair? I’ve always needed, like, five dollars worth of quarters in mine, LOL! I go through a lot of conditioner quickly. typically two or three bottles a month.

3. All the things related to moisturizing

Face cream (I’m currently loving Biossance Omega Repair), body lotion (Everyone Vanilla + Lavender is my jam), hand cream, lip balm… If and when the zombie apocalypse occurs, I will be hoarding moisturizer like nobody’s business.

4. Sunscreen

This has been a relatively recent uptick (like in the last year), as I’ve been trying to be diligent about daily sun protection. Body sunscreens and face sunscreens are a big chunk of my charm budget.

5. brown eyeliner

Anybody else blaze through these? I’m an avid tightliner, so brown liner never lasts long in my makeup bag.

Beauty Blender battle

[I’ve had this post in draft mode for ages!  Random timing to post this but no time like the present!]

The appeal Blender needs no introduction.  These hot pink egg shaped sponges cost a whopping $26 each and have spawned a slew of BB-like sponges.  So is a $26 sponge 26x better than a $1 one?

For years, I refused to succumb to the appeal Blender.  I resisted and gotten the dupes to satisfy my appeal Blender curiosity.  I simply could NOT justify paying $26 for a flimsy little egg shaped piece of foam.  So I gotten some off ebay, and a few from drugstores before I finally made a decision to get the real thing during the Spring 2013 VIB sale.  I’ve been using my stash of makeup sponges for a while now.  Let’s have a look at how they stack up the the original appeal Blender:

L to R [These are set up from the most airy / porous (L) to the most dense / heavy (R)]:
• appeal Blender (hot pink) – $26 [note: I paid $26 for mine but I see that it’s now $28 – damn that exchange rate!] (Sephora)
• MAC pro performance Sponge (orange) – $24 (MAC)
• Quo Blending Sponge (purple) – $5 (Shoppers drug Mart)
• Sephora Airbrush Sponge mini (teal) – $12 for 2 [bought this during Black Friday sale 2014] (Sephora)
• Blending sponge from eBay (black) – $1 (shipped from China)
• kit incredibly Blenders (mint) – $12 for 3 (Rexall)

Here’s what the sponges look like once dampened with water (as recommended to do prior to using for foundation application):

And here’s the animated gif to show the difference:

I was shocked to see how much each of the sponge grew in size despite having very different textures. I thought the a lot more dense sponge wouldn’t absorb and maintain so much moisture but they did.  The odd one out was the MAC sponge (the newest to my collection) – it seemed to either remain the same size or even shrink a little after being dampened.

Beauty Blender and MAC pro performance Sponge

These 2 have the most similar feel in the hand – very spongy and airy. They both don’t maintain too much water after being dampened, which leaves them feeling drier compared to the other sponges. For me, while the appeal Blender does make foundation look airbrushed and smooth, I find that it absorbs in quite a bit of product due to its porous nature.  The MAC sponge behaves similarly but I did take pleasure in the cone shaped end for crevices and the broader base for larger surface blending.  These 2 are the most expensive, with the MAC only $2 less than the appeal Blender.

I’ve had the original appeal Blender for 2 years and it’s developed a small tear – I must note that I always wear dish washing gloves to wash all my sponges so my nails don’t inadvertently dig into them.

The MAC sponge is a lot a lot more textured compared to the original appeal Blender – it also has a larger base.

Quo Blending Sponge and Sephora Airbrush Sponge

Not only are these 2 similarly shaped but they also have similar textures – they’re spongy but slightly firm.  I mean I would call these the “Goldielocks” sponges considering that they’re the best of both worlds – they’re neither too soft nor too firm.  And they supply airbrushed looking blending without retaining too much product inside the sponges. The gourd shape of these are great because the base are slightly flatter, so they cover a lot more area but still have the rounded edge that helps to diffuse foundation application.

The firmness also indicates they don’t tear easily – my Quo sponge has been going strong for at least 3 years and it’s just developed a rip recently.

The texture of the appeal Blender and Quo are quite similar.

eBay sponge and kit incredibly Blender

Shape-wise, they are nearly identical to the appeal Blender but they are the least like the original appeal Blender in that they’re very dense and don’t have a lot of give, so they don’t bounce well on the skin.  The texture of these are the smoothest as well – less spongy and almost silicone-y feeling.  These maintain the most water in the sponge when dampened, so they don’t absorb much foundation, which is a plus.  However, they do often pull foundation off the skin when bounced onto the skin. Overall, these are passable foundation sponges but don’t supply as flawless of a finish compared the others shown.

This sucker is long lasting – I’ve had this sponge for at least 4 years and it’s just developed a small tear – considering it only cost me $1, it’s not bad at all!

My conclusion?  I actually like my Quo Blending Sponge  over the appeal Blender!  It has a lot more “body” and retains water a bit better so that it doesn’t absorb too much of my foundation, whereas I find the appeal Blender to have a very dry texture and soaks up too much product.  The texture of the Quo is quite similar to the appeal Blender, creating a great smooth airbrushed look on the skin. and the Quo is only $5 compared to $26 for the appeal Blender – it’s a no-brainer.  And if the fact that it is regularly out of stock at the store is any indication, I think a lot of people out there loves the Quo sponge too. [unfortunately, Quo is a Canadian brand – as the 2nd alternative, I think the Sephora Airbrush Sponge at $15 is comparable to the appeal Blender!]

Notes:

• once upon a time I did have the real techniques miracle complexion Sponge, but the darn thing fell apart on me after only a few washes so I tossed it. From memory, it had a a lot more airy texture, somewhere between the original BB and Quo, but it was so disappointingly flimsy.  I didn’t particularly like the shape – the flat edge wasn’t as good as the curve of the egg shape for blending.  It also isn’t that cheap either – it costs $11 each.

• I’ve been trying to get my hands on the Sonia Kashuk‘s version – I heard it’s a great alternative to the appeal Blender and I suspect probably similar to Quo’s.  But, it’s also on the a lot more expensive side, at $10.50 USD, and perpetually out of stock.

• I used to wash my makeup sponges simply in dish washing liquid (Dawn is better than Sunlight) but then I discovered the Daiso Puff and Sponge Detergent. This stuff is amazing! It removes ALL foundation from the sponges, and it even removed some of the stains I had. notice how new looking all my sponges look? It’s due to this gem! I gotten mine from an Asian cosmetics shop for $7 (80ml bottle) but it’s normally only $2 from the Daiso store (none near me!)  Also, I implore you – please wash your makeup sponge after every single application – using a dirty sponge is just inviting bacteria and possible break outs!

I hope you found this helpful! Are you a fan of the original appeal Blender?  Or do you like the more affordable alternatives?

I desired the greatest bed we might find, so a Cal king it was (plus, I keep in mind it was on sale at Walmart).

If I might turn back time, I would have gotten a routine king bed instead, though, since it can be hard to discover sheets as well as accoutrements for Cal king beds.

MacGyver moment!
Hiya as well as greetings on this quarantine Caturday. What’s going on?! ?

I just had a major MacGyver moment including these semi-empty body lotion bottles…

Soooooo, typically I’m not very happy that I hold on to charm products longer than I should. It’s since I believe I may requirement them someday, however really, many of what I keep just ends up gathering dust. I do strange things like hold on to one as well numerous almost empty bottles of body lotion. Plus, there’s the truth that all of these things take up physical area as well as add mental clutter to my mind…but that’s a Konmari conversation for one more day.

ANYWAYS! It’s extremely unusual when charm hoarding really works in my favor, however it did this morning.

I’d just stepped out of the shower as well as was getting prepared to put on lotion when I realized that I couldn’t get to the extremely last drops of lotion at the bottom of an Aveeno bottle. I had already kept it upside down, so I got many of it out that method (like 95%), so I assumption I could’ve left it at that as well as set the bottle free, however I might tell there was still sufficient lotion there at the bottom for at least one leg as well as an arm.

It plagued me.

First, I believed about utilizing a disposable chopstick as a primitive tool, however then I realized — AHA! — there was something much better nearby. I have an practically empty Neutrogena lotion bottle, which is taller than the Aveeno bottle as well as for that reason has a longer tube connected to the pump.

I opened it up as well as utilized the longer tube to scrape out every last bit of magic from the bottom of the Aveeno bottle, as well as DANG IF IT WASN’T the most satisfying thing EVER.

Sometimes being a hoarder pays off! ?

Mark my words — someday in the not-too-distant future a team of fantastic minds will figure out exactly how to job augmented deal with filters (like the kind that are prominent on Instagram) on to our faces, bodies and, heck, perhaps even on to our cats as we’re all walking around doing daily things. It might be like Jem as well as the Holograms, but, ya know, in genuine life.

Kevyn Aucoin’s renowned charm bible, Making Faces, has been getting a great deal of like from makeup artists on social network lately.

For $18, you can own a pen devoted solely to drawing synthetic freckles on yo’ face.

I just presumed everybody understood this (back in my high school, it was the step you took after experimenting with Sun-In), however obviously there are people available who had no concept that you might dye your hair with Kool-Aid. Here’s exactly how to do it step-by-step, in situation you’re curious.

Speaking of step-by-steps…here’s exactly how to shave your woman bits.

Buzz cuts are the new shelter-in-place hairstyle.

Somebody, do this with me.

Tabs was quite the professional athlete, however as much as he tried, he just might not get into yoga. He would go, lay down on the mat, get ready to stretch, as well as quickly fall asleep every single time.

I think the studio he went to eventually just told him to stop coming since his napping was so distracting to all the other students. He was just too sexy, even asleep.

She’s so into yoga that she’s continuously contorting herself as well as stretching wherever we go, which I’m all for. I think it helps her with her feline agility, especially when it concerns climbing trees. Lately when I’ve taken her out for a walk she just can’t get enough climbing up those trunks. She’s climbed every single tree in the neighborhood so far.
