Trash Stash: October 2015

October’s trash stash features an exciting bunch of makeup products – woohoo!  Every month I put my empties in a Sephora tote and this month, it was overflowing:

But I did manage to get a group shot:

Last month I seemed to have finished all my face skincare, but this month I seemed to have finished all my base makeup!

Skincare, body and hair items first:

MAC Cleanse Off Oil – $37 for 150ml (MAC stores, The Bay and online)
This is an olive oil based cleansing oil, rather than a mineral oil base – so it would suitable for those who can’t tolerate mineral oil. It is quite expensive, but I love how effective it is. It’s my top 3 cleansing oils. I do like trying different cleansing oils but I will always return to this one.  The bottle is going into my pile of Back 2 MAC empties!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Sukin Hydrating mist Toner – $9 for 125ml (Rexall and health food stores)
I’ve pointed out this multiple times and I will continue to get this considering that it’s perfection in a bottle.  It’s hydrating without being too heavy, and the spray pump delivers such a fine mist – like a fairy sprinkling moisture droplets on my face!
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Michael Todd Intensive organic cream Eye treatment – $48 USD for 15ml (online)
I got this from Groupon along with the gimmicky Eye-O-Sonic device for ~$30. The eye treatment is a really watery milky serum that doesn’t absorb into the skin very well. The dispensing mechanism is really pointless – I don’t use the nozzle to apply to my eyes.  The product is not very hydrating and I didn’t notice any difference to my eye area.  I reserved this for summer time usage when I checked it and observed how lightweight it was.
Stash worthiness: 4/10     Repurchase: No

Bobbi brown Hydrating Eye cream – $56 for 15ml (The Bay, Murale, Sephora)
I redeemed optimum points for this, but unfortunately, I picked up the wrong item. I had really wanted the extra Eye repair Cream, but the jars look so similar! The Hydrating Eye cream ended up being too lightweight for my under eye area – my skin soaked up this product nearly immediately, leaving the area looking dry. I actually ended up using this as my day moisturizer to finish it up. I would recommend this product for those who do not need much moisture on their under eye area – it’s a great fragrance-free product.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Sana Hiaruronsan moisture Gel – $18 for 25g
This consists of hyaluronic acid and has a powdery matte finish once dried, making it a base for the the summer.  It has a bit of a baby powder scent but isn’t overwhelming.  The little matryoshka doll container is too cute to throw away – I’m trying to figure out what to make with it.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No (discontinued)

TheFaceShop konjac sponge – $4 each (TheFaceShop and online)
I use a konjac sponge every morning to wash my face in the shower. It’s just become a routine now. It helps to lather up my face wash and supplies gentle exfoliation.  TheFaceShop one is my much-loved of all the ones I’ve tried so far – and it seems like the store has a constant supply of now after they were out of stock for months.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Clarins Pure & Radiant Mask – $31 for 50ml (department stores & online)
I love this pink clay based mask! When I was younger, I used the stinky cult much-loved Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque – but now I would never apply something so strong to my sensitive skin.  The Clarins one is so gentle yet effective – whenever my skin acts up, I apply this and it calms it down without over-stripping the skin.  It’s a bit pricey for a mask but this tube did last me at least 6 months.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Avon Anew scientific Micro-Exfoliant (I think it was around $30 for the 75ml tube, regrettably this is discontinued)
This is a very fine grain scrub that’s not too abrasive for my skin – it uses aluminum powder as its exfoliant.  Once upon a time I was really into microdermabrasion type of products – lots of them felt like I was rubbing shards of glass onto my skin, but this Avon one fit the bill.  My skin felt smooth and soft after using this, but didn’t turn incredibly red / splotchy from the abrasion.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: No (discontinued)

Sisley Eau Efficace gentle makeup remover for eyes and lips (deluxe sample) – USD $125 for 300ml
I am shocked at how dreadful this is at removing eye makeup considering how outrageously expensive this line is. It smears the makeup around rather than removing it – it can’t even manage non-waterproof mascara.  I ended up using this up as a second step cleanser for my face after I oil cleansed.  The only good thing about this is that it didn’t irritate my skin. I have another deluxe sample of this in stash – I am tempted to just throw it away! You know what’s an exceptional gentle eye makeup remover? Rimmel. That stuff is remarkable and it’s only $9.
Stash worthiness: 2/10     Repurchase: No!

The face shop THE therapy essential formula emulsion – $40 for 130ml (The face shop stores and online)
I received this as part of a kit that I purchased – unfortunately, this product ended up breaking me out. I broke the cardinal rule of not using a whole bunch of new skincare products all at once – so when my skin began to flare up I had to do some deductive sleuthing to figure out which one was the cause. I finally narrowed it down to this product over Thanksgiving weekend because it was the only cream I brought along, and my face erupted in little bumps all over my forehead and cheeks! even the SO asked me wtf happened to my face?  It’s too bad because I do like this emulsion as it is lightweight yet very hydrating. I’m trying to figure out which ingredient might be the culprit – I’m thinking it might be the palm or canola oil? My skin typically hates “natural” type oils.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Shiseido Instant Eye and Lip makeup remover (gwp size) – $30 for 125ml (department stores and online)
I’ve received and gone through many bottles of this. It’s effective to remove stubborn waterproof eye makeup, and gentle to the eye area. I just don’t think it’s worth the high price tag, and I do find that it clouds my vision and leaves a greasy film on my skin. I wouldn’t purchase the full size.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Poshé topcoat – $11 for 14ml (Sally appeal Supply)
I didn’t take a picture of it but I discarded out the rest of my pink tinted Poshé so I could start fresh. I decanted from my big bottle back into the empty small bottle.  Check out my review of this topcoat here.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Beauty secrets Nourishing Acetone nail polish remover – $9 for $946ml (Sally appeal Supply)
This has been my go-to nail polish remover ever considering that Walmart stopped carrying my old favourite, the ONYX Moisturizing nail polish Remover. I go through this ~1L bottle about once every 8 months. This is a Sally appeal exclusive and they sell it in various sizes, including a jug that’s 4 times this size.  I decant this into a Zoya remove pump bottle that I’ve probably been reusing for the past 6 years (Zoya remove is awesome, but too expensive for what it is).  This remover gets the job done – I even removed UV gel polish using this.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Neutrogena T/Gel® Therapeutic Shampoo – $10 for 130ml (drugstores)
This smells like the best blend of tar and moth balls. It boasts that it consists of 0.5% real coal tar! I relied on this for itchy flaky scalp last wintertime and just manage to finish it.  It works well (nice lather, cleans hair but doesn’t strip it) but I’ve found other products work well too (Head & Shoulders) and doesn’t leave my hair stinking like tar + moth balls all day.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Ion curl options styling Creme – $8 for 177ml (Sally appeal Supply)
I’ve used this before and I really like it.  And considering that my beloved Biotera curl Creme has been confirmed as officially discontinued, this Ion one will likely become my next staple.  I need remember to only use a small amount of this or else my hair gets crunchy.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Curl Keeper – $17 for 250ml (salons / online)
I’ve been going through this stuff like water! I love it and will continue using this as long as they make it (or if I find something better / cheaper).
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Fat Hair 0 Calories root Lifter Spray – $12 (drugstores)
I got this in the clearance section so I paid half the regular price.  It’s just ok – some days I can’t tell the difference between using this spay and not.  I still like the now discontinued John Frieda root Awakening spray.  I haven’t found a comparable replacement – yet!
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

Delon+ premium Cotton Rounds– approx $1.60 for 100 count (available at Costco and Amazon.com)
I used these up every few months but I keep forgetting to keep the bag for trash stash posts.  I use this nightly for my toner – it has a mesh exfoliating layer, is lint-free, and doesn’t fall apart.  It’s very inexpensive and something that I always keep on hand.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Nivea anxiety secure stick – $6 for 43g (drugstores)
This is my much-loved antiperspirant but I’m going to try to give antiperspirants a rest. This wintertime I’m going to test out natural deodorant options that don’t consist of aluminum. I’m just not sure to make of the information out there.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Time & again Shea Butter in gentle Rain
I received this as gift and it’s pretty good. I use it as a hand / foot cream at bed time. I like the formula – it’s thick but not greasy. regrettably I don’t love the scent. I’m not even sure where to get this brand – it says Ganz on the back so I’m assuming at gifty / card stores.
Stash worthiness: 6/10     Repurchase: No

TonyMoly Peach Anti-Aging Hand Cream – $7 for 30g
I received this as a present as well.  I did not have high hopes for this hand cream – but it is a fantastic hand cream with a soft natural peach scent. It’s not greasy and absorbs swiftly and feels hydrating on my hands. It did get quite thick and dried out toward the end so I couldn’t even scoop out the last bits, I guess it dried out due to the jar packaging.
Stash worthiness: 8/10     Repurchase: Yes

Sephora Blotting Papers in natural Lavender – $10 for 100 sheets (Sephora)
These are actually quite good and reminded me of the Shiseido ones that I like a lot.  Sephora doesn’t sell this particular kind but they offer a Herbal rose version now.  The sheets are larger than the average blotting sheet so only 1 sheet is needed per blot instead of the normal 2 (big moon face problems) – great value.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Prestige Primed & ready Eye primer – $15 for 15ml (London drugs and online)
This is one of my much-loved drugstore eyelid primers. It works perfectly to stop my eye shadows from creasing and it doesn’t dry out my eyelids. I purchased this on a whim when Rexall was clearing out the whole Prestige line when they replaced it with NYX, so I got it for 50% off. This particular tube lasted me ~18 months with daily use – it was absolutely worth it. I would consider repurchasing this if I come across the brand again. I’ve got another unopened tube of this, plus a couple of other primers to use up first.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Makeup

Charmzone Natural Skinade BB cream – $45 for 50ml (Amazon & online)
A much-loved of mine. I did a review on this as one of my earliest articles so the pictures aren’t the greatest, but my review of it still stands – it’s an remarkable BB cream that I will repurchase as long as I can find it!  I have an unopened tube of this gotten late last year.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

MAC Mineralize Skinfish natural in medium – $37 for 10g (MAC stores & online)
One of my much-loved powders. It supplies a satin finish that is very natural looking with some coverage (Charmzone BB cream + MSFN is my go to base combo). A compact lasts me around 4 months with daily usage.  This is also going into my Back 2 MAC empties pile!
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind double face Perfector in Light medium 720
The end of an era. This was my HG under eye concealer which got discontinued it in 2011 (I did a Maybelline concealer introduction here where I go over this product in a lot more detail). I gotten a few back-ups – there are still some of these floating around up for sale online, but even unopened, the stock is getting old now. My only problem about this concealer was the tiny amount (2.7ml) of product in the tube.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: No (discontinued)

Make Up For ever Aqua Eyes liner in 24L Taupe Brown – $15 for 1.2g (Sephora)
Look at the little nub of a pencil! I couldn’t even hold it to sharpen it anymore.  I was so delighted to discover this a few years ago. I suffer from a debilitating deficiency in which I only have 3 viable eyelashes on my lower lash line. I look like an alien if I don’t wear just a hint of colour to create the illusion of lashes / depth on my lower lash line. but it was near impossible to find a light shade that looked inconspicuous. MUFE in 24L was the answer to my prayers! I’ve used up a couple of these liners before and already have a backup that I gotten last year. The only downside to this pencil is that it’s not 100% budge-proof, I do have to set it with a bit of powder eye shadow (I like MAC Wedge for that

Beauty things to Do before the new Year

I do my hair toss, check my nails…
On this last day of 2021, truth be told I’m not feeling the usual sense something ending and something new beginning. In the effort to impart a sense of newness for 2022, today I plan to a few beauty things so I can at least try a little to feel like I’m starting fresh, and yes, of course I have a list!

Beauty things to do before the new year

Wax my upper lip hair.

Pluck and trim my brows.

Put on a mega moisturizing hair mask, and leave it in while I watch the new episode of “And just like That.” Man, I know I said I wasn’t going to get sucked in, but at this point I’m already invested and don’t fee like I can get off this train, ya know?

Paint my fingers and toes. I’m thinking OPI’s I’m Not really a Waitress.

Do a body scrub.

Style my hair! I’ve been throwing it into a messy fun bun all week long. It’s time to actually do stuff to it!

How about you? Do you have any beauty tasks lined up for this last day of 2021?

Oh, thank you so much for all of your ideas for hobbies. I’m still not sure what hobby I’m going to choose, but I did manage to start reading a new book purely for pleasure today (“Klara and the Sun,” a science fiction story by Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the 2017 Nobel prize for Literature), which is a start.

Enjoy the last day of this year!

Chemical exfoliants

since it’s officially summer, this week’s focus will be on “radiant skin” and I’ll be covering topics relating to achieving clear and glowy skin.  First, we’ll look at chemical exfoliants.

Don’t let the word “chemical” scare you, this is just to distinguish between the physical / manual type (scrubs, cloths, loofahs) and the ones that solely use non-abrasive ingredients to exfoliate the skin.

The 2 key categories of chemical exfoliants are BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and AHA (alpha hydroxy acid).  A trick I use to help myself remember which is for what purpose is: BHA = blemishes, and AHA = anti-aging.  Typically, BHA works better for oily skin types whereas AHA benefit drier skin.

The queen of exfoliants is Paula’s choice (PC) – she definitely revolutionized the average consumer’s understanding and access to chemical exfoliants.  Her BHA and AHA offering are undoubtedly the best on the market for the price. here are some exfoliants in my skincare collection:

BHA:

BHA works by exfoliating beneath the surface of the skin.  BHA is oil soluable, so for blemish-prone skin where excess sebum can get trapped in pores, BHA can help to unclog them.  The key active ingredient that falls under the BHA category is salicylic acid (there is also some claims that willow bark can mimic BHA actions on the skin).  Shown here are PC Skin Perfecting 2% BHA liquid and 2% BHA Gel.  I prefer the liquid version since it doesn’t leave a sticky film on my skin.  Personally, I haven’t found BHA to be effective for me but it’s not geared toward my skin type.

AHA:

AHA on the other hand, is my jam! Whenever, I use AHA, my skin just glows.  AHA is water soluable and acts on the surface of the skin, sloughing off dead skin which can cause the skin to look dull.  The feeling of AHA on the skin can be how you’d expect from an “acid” – which is to say it can tingle or burn if the concentration is too strong.  There are a wide range of active ingredients that fall under the AHA umbrella, including: glycolic acid, lactic acid, Malic acid, and citric acid – but glycolic acid remains the most popular.

My favourite AHA product is PC resist weekly Resurfing treatment 10% AHA (in fact, it’s my favourite product from PC, period).  I use this weekly or sometimes more often if I find my skin looking lackluster.  I’ve decanted the last of my nearly empty bottle into a squeeze bottle for easier dispensing – it’s an amber coloured liquid.  After my normal toner, I pour about a dime size of the AHA liquid onto the palms of my hands and pat onto my face.

Another AHA product I like is surprisingly from Physician’s formula (PF). Its Anti Aging Laser Resurfacing Serum with 2.4 AHA is a gentle exfoliant that can be used nightly if desired (it uses lactic acid).  I apply this lightweight gel lotion to cleansed face underneath my regular nighttime moisturizer – it makes my skin very soft and glowy.  There’s also vitamin C and peptide in the concoction – it has quite a strong fragrance which isn’t offensive (I can’t place the smell but my first thought was Play-Doh).

The other AHA products pictured are: PC 8% AHA Gel and beyond belief ABH Intensive repair Serum (this was Sally beauty supply brand and is discontinued now unfortunately), and Neostrata Invigorating solution pads (also discontinued).  I mostly stick to AHA and only use BHA during the week prior to my period when my hormonal blemishes tend to flare up.  I don’t use BHA and AHA on the same nights but I’ve read that it can be done – just apply BHA first, then let it absorb for 30 minutes, then apply AHA.  I do always wait 30 minutes before applying serum or moisturizer on top of either AHA / BHA. using BHA and AHA will cause increased sun sensitivity (all products include this warning) so daily application of sunscreen is imperative!

Do you use any BHA or AHA products?

Project pan 12 Collab: The end

What an epic journey! When I first agreed to do project Pan, I thought it was going to be FUN. Oh how wrong I was. This is the song that went through my head (sang to the tune of “The song That never Ends“):

This is the Collab that never ends
It just goes on and on my friends
I agree to doing it, not knowing what it was
And I’m wearing the same makeup for 3 months because…
{repeat from top}

I’m teasing. I did take pleasure in doing project Pan, especially doing it alongside my collab buddies!

And I’m really pleased of myself for sticking to these products and diligently using them 5 out of 7 days, at minimum.

I’ll do a similar closure to this project as my last one; I’ll give a rating to each and then estimate the probability of me actually finishing each product before I toss them out:

Week 1: Sephora Jumbo liner in Brown
Starting weight: 0.020 Ending weight: 0.011
The length of this pencil was 10.5cm at the start, and I sharpened it 4 times during the 12 weeks and the length ended at 8.4cm.
Stash worthiness: 9/10
Likelihood of finishing: 75%

Week 2: Anna Sui eyebrow color Compact in Ash Brown
Starting weight: 0.088 Ending weight: 0.086
Stash worthiness: 7/10
Likelihood of finishing: 25%

Week 3: Shiseido Luminizing Satin face color in High Beam White
Starting weight: 0.112 Ending weight: 0.112
Stash worthiness: 10/10
Likelihood of finishing: 5%

Week 4: KATE Stick Concealer in natural Beige

Stash worthiness: 9/10
Likelihood of finishing: 90%

Week 5: Guerlain Rouge G Lipstick in Garance
Starting weight: 0.072 Ending weight: 0.071
Stash worthiness: 8/10
Likelihood of finishing: 50%

Week 6: The Body shop Fresh nude foundation in 020 Bali Vanilla
Starting weight: 0.221 Ending weight: 0.185
Stash worthiness: 8/10
Likelihood of finishing: 95%

Week 7: Lancôme Khol in love eye liner in chocolate Affair
Starting weight: 0.009 Ending weight: 0.006 (I think? The scale refused to show a weight when I tried to photograph it so the last known reading was at 0.006)
The length of this pencil was 9.8cm at the start, and I sharpened it 3 times during the 12 weeks and the length ended at 7.2cm
Stash worthiness: 8/10
Likelihood of finishing: 0%
There’s no chance I’ll use this up because I’m tossing it considering that the pencil is dried out and loose from the wooden casing.

Week8: NYX Powder blush in Taupe PB11
Starting weight: 0.046 Ending weight: 0.046
Stash worthiness: 8/10
Likelihood of finishing: 20%

Week 12: Cargo HD pressed Powder #20
Starting weight: 0.169 Ending weight: 0.159
Stash worthiness: 9/10
Likelihood of finishing: 100%

Notes:
• I achieved a huge accomplishment: I actually hit pan on an eye shadow! It’s so silly, yes I know. but it’s not!
• only 1 item will be tossed at the conclusion of project pan – the Lancôme eye liner

• The item that showed the most significant weight loss / usage was TBS Fresh nude foundation at -0.036  Just look at the bottle – woohoo!
• and let’s be real, I’ll likely never ever hit pan on the blush, the contour or the highlighting powders!

If you missed any of the project pan 12 posts, they’re all available here.

Please check out my project pan friends for their final updates:
• Ingrid of Curly.Spring.Blossom
• Jodi of A Brash Attitude
• Chanelle of Chanelle Hayleyyy (Chanelle will be posting hers next Monday!)

Thank you so much for following project Pan, and for all your support throughout! I’m free, I’m finally complimentary of my makeup jail!

Pantone colour(s) of the year: increased Quartz & Serenity

two colours were revealed this year!

Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) and Serenity (Pantone 15-3919)

Interestingly, this is the very first year Pantone has chosen 2 colours, as well as both colours offer a hold of possibilities in the cosmetics world.  I can envision a gorgeous blush combination with different increased Quartz-ish shades, as well as Serenity would make lovely eye as well as nail products.  In one of my TBT posts, I guessed that Pantone may select either a yellow or a blue. I got 50% right!

Read more from Pantone as well as WWD.

What are your thoughts about the 2016 Pantone colours of the year?

Trash Stash: July 2016

It’s a holiday here today. It’s just called a Civic holiday but the implying varies depending where you live in Canada. In BC, it’s called British Columbia Day, in Alberta it’s called Heritage Day… very specifically, in the city of Toronto, it’s Simcoe Day. Simcoe Day is named after John Graves Simcoe, who founded the town of York, upper Canada, which became Toronto. He was also the first lieutenant governor of the province. now you know!

Onward to the July trash Stash:

I’d call this month a pretty average month in terms of using things up, except for ONE epic empty that I’ve been working away at for YEARS.

Skincare

Superfacialist Vitamin C Skin Renew Cleansing oil – C$13 for 200ml
I stocked up on these from Winners a while back and I’m just working my way through my stash. It smells like orange Creamsicle and the base oil is sunflower oil – what’s there not to love?
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Saje sensitive Elixir Calming Skin Serum – C$19.95 for 30ml
I evaluated this! here ya go.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Body shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner – $13 for 200ml
I’m not typically faithful to toners but this is one I’ve repurchased. It’s a thicker consistency compared to other toners, like a watery gel. It lives up to its name – it’s very hydrating and I recommend this for all skin types.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Paula’s choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant – $28 for 100ml
This is an OLD bottle. I purchased it on clearance because PC was changing up their packaging. I’ve tried both AHA and BHA in both liquid and gel format and I much choose the liquid format. The gel leaves a sticky residue on the skin. They’re both effective though. I am thinking of getting the lotion format next to test out.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: No

Smashbox photo finish primer Water – $37 for 116ml
This stuff sucks – I evaluated it here. I ended up mixing some glycerin into it and a bit of rosewater too – it was much more tolerable that way. and good riddance!
Stash worthiness: 3/10     Repurchase: No

Delon+ premium Cotton Rounds – approx $1.60 for 100 count
Another staple. I’ve probably got 10 unopened packs of this which I got from Costco.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Fruits & passion green Tea sheet mask – $2
I never knew Fruits & passion provided sheet masks. I suspect it’s due to its new-ish owners, LG, which also owns TheFaceShop. The mask is made in Korea, and the packaging looks a lot like TheFaceShop masks. There’s a good amount of serum in the pouch. The eye and mouth placements are good on these, but the sheet is too short length-wise for my face.
Stash worthiness: 7/10     Repurchase: Yes

TheFaceShop Konjac sponge
Speaking of TheFaceShop, this is my preferred face sponge. I probably use these for longer than is recommended.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Haircare

TRESemmé TRES two Ultra fine mist Hair Spray – C$8 for 311g
This is my longtime preferred hair spray but I’m getting itchy to try something new. any recommendations? I use hair spray primarily to tame fly-aways at the top of my head. I like a very fine mist and no residue or shiny “hair spray” look. and something that smells good.
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Yes

Curl Keeper – $17 for 250ml
This shows up every other month, it seems. I’m now using a hair mousse. I haven’t used a hair mousse in years.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Bodycare

Bath & Body works Waikiki beach Coconut shower Gel – C$12.50 for 295ml
This was the limited edition version from 2015 – they changed the label artwork for this years’ version to show a coconut rather than a hibiscus. I still have another unopened bottle from the 2015 – I didn’t pick up any from 2016 and now I wish I had so I can compare. I heard that the scent was changed slightly (and not for the better). But, this one is great. I’m putting “maybe” as a repurchase because BBW might bring this back next year, who knows!
Stash worthiness: 9/10     Repurchase: Maybe

Blue + cross Cuticle remover – C$6 for 473ml
This is the epic empty! I think I’ve been using this bottle for at least 5 years. I’ve tried various cuticle removers over the years from Sally Hansen, Avon, Mavala etc. but this one beats them all and it’s cheap as chips! There are only 5 ingredients in this with the essential ingredient being potassium hydroxide which has a high ph (alkaline) and essentially beats down the dead skin until the skin says “my apologies, I’ll just vacate the premises”. I decant from this massive bottle into a small squeeze bottle to use – about 2 drops per nail is all you need. I wait about a minute for it to work its magic and then push back my cuticles.
Stash worthiness: 10/10     Repurchase: Yes

Samples / travel Sizes

I’m really digging into my sample stash lately – I’ve been making good progress!

TonyMoly Aquaporin Water Bomb Sleeping pack – this is my first sleeping mask andI liked it – doesn’t feel heavy and did offer great hydration.

Body shop Vitamin C radiance Capsule – I was curious about this and the SA gave me a capsule to try out. thankful I evaluated it – it felt much more like a primer than a serum.

Blinc Mascara Amplified – this was my first time trying tubing mascara and it was such a letdown. It offers no volume and hardly any length. and it didn’t hold a curl.

Blinc eyebrow Mousse – made my brows crispy and clump together – didn’t like that.

Coastal Scents small hot Pots Eye shadow in Chamois nude – My friend got this in her Ipsy bag and passed it to me. I really like this for a brow bone highlight. RIP little man (shown here beside a Canadian quarter for scale – Canadian quarters are the same size as American ones, thus we often get American quarters mixed into our change.)

Mary Kay Timewise night service – this is a gel serum with little coloured beads suspended. It was ok, but nothing mind-blowing.

Clarins very Restorative night wear – this was good but unremarkable to me. The sample only contained enough product for 3 uses so I can’t form a true impression of it except that it smelled good and my skin didn’t break out.

Biotherm Biocils Lash Optimizer – this, however, was love at first sight! I’ve had multiples samples of this and have a full size bottle which I’ll be opening soon. This is probably my preferred waterproof eye makeup remover – effective yet gentle and does not leave a greasy film.

Josie Maran Pure Argan Milk  – I talk about this product in the review post for the Saje serum, coincidentally.

Biotherm Aquasource Gel – this is similar to the Clinique moisture surge extended Thirst relief but this is heavily scented and much more watery.

History of Whoo Seol Whitening Intensive – this is a thick serum / paste implied to be applied after essence and before face cream. I focused this on my freckles and it did diddly-squat. This was a sample I received as part of a kit I purchased 3 years ago now. Which I still haven’t opened. It’s on my next skincare hit list.

Rimmel stay Matte liquid Mousse foundation in 100 Ivory – I think I tore this out of a magazine. It’s actually quite good – it does have a whipped mousse texture but is a bit liquidy (hence the name!) It doesn’t cling to dry spots and does keep the face matte. I’d consider purchasing a full size of this. The colour match is good, I might opt for “True Ivory” which looks to be slightly warmer. I have another sample pouch – one pouch is enough for 2 uses.

Cake charm Vanilla Cashmere Velveteen Hand cream – a beautiful hand cream in a limited edition scent – Milk Made is still my favourite!

Body shop Piñita Colada shower Gel and Body Butter – I was thrilled for this launch but after trying the samples I chose not to purchase the full size. The piña colada scent leans heavy on the pineapple, barely any trace of coconut.

Those are my trash stash for July – did you use up anything last month?

Non-beauty Japan Haul

Here’s a bit of a throw back Thursday post. It’s been nearly 2 months since I returned from Japan!  Here are some non-beauty bits I picked up from Japan.

I didn’t do much clothing shopping in Japan. There wasn’t a ton there that I couldn’t get here at home. Although, I was a big fan of their style: the standard outfit consisted of elastic waist a-line skirt and a loose boxy top, worn with platform wedge sandals or Birkenstocks. It was all about comfort!

Uniqlo

I was so excited to stumble on the liberty of London x Uniqlo while I was there! I ended up buying 2 items from the collection:

“Relaco” culottes – these are so comfy! (culottes are very popular in Japan, I noticed)

Canvas tote – mine has navy handles and base instead of the white.

And this was from Uniqlo’s regularly line:

V-neck overalls (this is what the Google translate spits out when I translated this “Vネックサロペット”) – I’d call this a romper. I got this because it looks like the quintessential “Japanese” fashion. here are typical Japanese women’s outfits:

I aim to emulate these looks when I wear the romper!

Clothes shopping is a pleasant experience in Japan – they provide shoes of various heights to try on with your items. I experienced something similar at higher end stores in Hong Kong as well.

They also provide these disposable face cover sheets so you don’t soil the clothes with your makeup – smart!  Uniqlo is planning to open a location in Toronto this October – it will be interesting to see how the pricing will be for the Canadian market.

Daiso and Can⋆Do

These are the Japanese version of a dollar store. Things are priced by increments of ¥100 – the most expensive things I’ve seen are ¥500 (~C$6.30)

Pencil holders – I don’t know how they are able to sell these for only ¥200 each (~C$2.50) and they’re made in Japan!

I plan to use these to hold eyeliners and shorter brushes.

Hello Kitty pouch – not sure what I’m going to use this for but it’s an authentic Sanrio product for ¥100 (~C$1.25). This was the only hello Kitty item I bought on the whole trip, even though the selection was extensive:

SHOCKER!

Foaming net, and cotton buds – if you look up articles of what to buy in Japanese drugstores, more often than not you’ll see them recommend Japanese cotton buds. They’re supposed to be superior to what we get here.

I saw some up for sale that were made in China so I made sure to buy ones made in Japan!

Clear plastic earrings and hair elastics – I have nickel allergies and so far, I’ve only been able to wear earrings with titanium posts. But, I find titanium very heavy to wear for an extended period of time. I’ve heard of these little plastic earrings before but they’re not available locally.  I hope these work for me! and the hair elastics are just like the Invisibobbles, which retails $10 for 3pcs. This cost me ¥100 (~C$1.25) for 6pcs!

Randoms

Japanese socks – 2 of them have the toe separation meant to be worn with Geta “下駄” (traditional Japanese sandals). The one on the right has a cat design at the heel. They’re so cute!

Bracelet kit, coin purse frame, and liberty of London fabric – I stumbled upon a crafting section inside a department store:

I felt up some of the knitting yarns but ultimately decided not to buy any.

But I did find some Marimekko and Liberty of London fabric (I think these were quilting squares).

And a vast selection of frames to make coin purses.

Here’s something you don’t know about me – I love old-fashioned coin purses with the twist clasps. I just find them so precious. I’ve never made my own so I’m excited to try!

Nanoblocks in Pikachu and giant Panda – I’ve been interested in getting Nanoblocks for ages but they’re overpriced online. funny that I bought the Pikachu way before the whole Pokémon GO thing started!  I wanted things that were “Japanesey”, hence also the panda.

ハイチュウ Hi-Chew

This is my favourite candy! We discovered the Japanese-made Hi-Chews in a local Japanese market in Toronto a few years ago and have been buying them every time we come across them. There are also “Hi-Chew” which are made in Taiwan and we don’t like those as much. The Japanese-made ones have only the Japanese name “ハイチュウ” on the package, whereas the Taiwanese made ones show the English name. read more about the differences here.  So naturally we had to stock up:

These are the regular flavours that you can find at most convenient stores (top to bottom): Strawberry, green Apple, Grape, and Lemon.

These are some special ones we came across at random places like train stations and Daiso (top to bottom): Cola, Bitter Orange (omg I want to marry this flavour), Kagoshima Yuzu Fruit (which is a citrus fruit similar to grapefruit), and rich Mango. I am just gutted that I didn’t buy more than 1 of the Bitter Orange flavour – there’s nothing bitter about it, it’s just an intense orange flavour with bits of orange rind (like marmalade) inside. As you can see we dug into the package already. We’re about half way through these flavours now and I’m trying to find online sources to secure more!

The SO found this at the airport – they’re a special regional flavour with special images from the region of Hokkaido. The flavour is cantaloupe and it tastes so much like the real fruit!

That is all the candies we got. We came across a lot of interesting flavours of kit Kat (strawberry, red apple, green tea etc) but we’re just not big fans of kit Kats so we passed on them.

Gashapon

These are vending machine capsule toys, which I didn’t know there was a term for until I saw it on RCubed’s blog.  I was quite amused by the rows of these machines at the Akihabara District. For ¥200, you can walk away with anything from a key chain to a mini kit to grow a plant!  I had a difficult time narrowing my decision but was quite happy to walk away with this little squid like creature key chain:

Then at the Narita airport, we were trying to get rid of the last our of cash, so I had some change to spare and blew them on these:

The middle key chain is fake potato chips that looks real enough to eat! that one on the right is apparently from Gudetama. I saw lots of Gudetama merchandise in hello Kitty / Sanrio stores but at the time I did not understand what the egg-like blob was about. I’ve since been schooled about Gudetama from Cutepretybeauty on IG. All I knew at the time was that the vending machine showed the possibility of getting one of these:

I really wanted the one with Gudetama in the frying pan but I got the bowling pin looking thing instead, which turns out is actually Japanese mayonnaise.

I was also hoping to get the dog in the hot dog bun, or the bacon-wrapped dachshund:

What is up with the Japanese putting animal characters inside food?  Advice to the Narita airport – you need to install way more of these vending machines. think of how many tourists are trying to get rid of their leftover coins. You’d make a killing! You’re welcome.

While I was at the airport waiting to board the flight home, a girl came up to me to ask me to fill in a survey for visitors to Tokyo. It asked questions about what districts we visited, and how much on average we spent on hotels and food.  When I handed her back the survey, she gave me this as a token of appreciation:

It’s a sushi eraser!    So sweet! I’ve taken surveys before and never got a thank you gift like this!

And those are my non-beauty haul from Japan!  What do you normally buy as souvenirs when you travel?

PS. My header image shows a bunch of Monchichi dolls. I was itching to get one but they were so pricey – I couldn’t in good conscience buy a $50 stuffed toy.

PP12: Bourjois Java Rice loose Powder

Today I’m showing a product that sat collecting dust in my makeup drawers for years:

The Bourjois Java Rice loose Powder:

I got mine in 2013, in an anniversary set that contained a bunch of products, and it stated that it was limited edition:

But I guess this product proved to be popular because it’s now available alone, for about $16 for a 3.5g jar.

The Java Rice Powder is one of Bourjois oldest products and for their 150th anniversary, they reinvented the product with an updated packaging based on the original vintage style:

Source.
Bourjois claims:

A delicately scented feather-light powder that lights up and smoothes complexion in one step. Its radiant and velvety finish right away creates a youthful glow. One translucent shade is universal and lights up all skin tones.

I got this powder specifically to use as a setting powder for under my eye area since it has a tint of pink and a slight iridescence to it. It’s terrific for highlighting but doesn’t perform too well in preventing concealers from creasing.

Lately I’ve been mixing a bit of the e.l.f. HD Powder with the Bourjois to set my under eye and the combination has been working really well. The e.l.f. HD Powder is basically a really finely milled silica powder. But, it can leave the skin looking dull and flat. The Bourjois powder adds a luminosity back to the skin.

I use the Clinique Eye shadow brush to apply this to my under eye area.

Side note: The Clinique brush is way too big to use for blending eye shadows on my eyelids. See it how compares to the MAC 217. It is quite soft and fluffy so it’s good for use under the eye area.

It’s difficult to swatch powders like this. I took probably 10 photos trying to capture the sparkle.  The e.l.f. HD Powder is like Photoshop for your face.
The Java Rice Powder is only offered in 1 shade, and even though Bourjois claims this is universally flattering. I don’t think it would work on olive or dark skin tones – it would look ashy since it does have a pinky white base.

My last ditch effort to show the sparkle. Please don’t pull some CSI wizardry and steal my fingerprint.
I have tried to use this as an all over powder on my face but I find it too glowy. It’s better served as a highlighter for targeted areas – I especially like this for inner eye corner and cupid’s bow (upper area of the lips). note that this has no oil control properties whatsoever despite it being called a rice powder (unlike the cult product Palladio Rice Powder paper). I honestly don’t understand the name of this product… java rice? It does contain rice powder, but java? But, it was named 150 years ago, so who knows…

One of the best things going for this powder isn’t actually the product itself – it’s the container that it’s housed in. It has a sifter that can swivel and close up the holes. I have it set so that only one hole is exposed, so very little product dispenses (and even then, it’s way more than I need!) I’ll think of that I could travel with this container if I wanted to. You bet that once this powder is finished, I’d reuse this jar!

To use this, I tilt the closed jar upside down to get some of the product onto the lid. Whatever is on the lid is how I much I need to set both eyes.
Another thing I really like about this powder is purely superficial – it smells so nice! apparently the Java Rice Powder has the same fragrance of the little round Pot blushes. To me, it smells soft and floral… “Powdery Rose” is what I’d describe it as.

Ingredients:
Mica, silica, talc, CI 77891 (titanium dioxide), boron nitride, caprylyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, p-anisic acid, CI 77491 (iron oxides), parfum (fragrance), potassium sorbate, hexylene glycol, oryza sativa (rice) starch, caprylic/capric triglyceride, CI77492 (iron oxides), lauroyl lysine, CI 75470 (carmine), hydroxycitronellal, tin oxide, cinnamyl alcohol, eugenol, benzyl salicylate, linalool, evernia prunastri extract, citronellol, geraniol, amyl cinnamal, alpha-isomethyl ionone, hexyl cinnamal, rose extract, 12BMT010-1

For vegetarian / vegans out there, this product does contain carmine which is crushed beetle scales. Yup. YUM.

This product is made in Italy.

Pros:
• subtle finish
• Blurs lines and adds luminosity
• vintage looking packaging
• Well designed dispenser
• Soft scent

Cons:
• messy loose powder
• Colour may not be universally flattering
• Not suitable for those who are sensitive to fragrance

Stash worthiness: 7/10

I’m not sure what happened between last week and this week but I weighed this 6 times and still got this measurement, which is 0.002 less than last week. I didn’t eat any of this, I swear.

I’m so pleased to see the MAC eye shadow quad went down again!

Please check out my project pan pals for their updates:
• Ingrid of Curly.Spring.Blossom
• Jodi of A Brash Attitude
• Chanelle of Chanelle Hayleyyy

Do you set your under eye concealer? What do you use?
