New to Me: Teeez Cosmetics

I heard about Teeez Cosmetics being available at Hudson’s Bay from Jodi of A Brash attitude a couple of weeks ago. then I happen to walk by the charm Underground section in the Bay downtown and saw the new counter that has been set up (sadly, it replaced the Anna Sui counter! AS is still available at select charm boutiques at consumers though). Although the counter is quite sparse looking best now, the eye catching packaging of the Teeez Cosmetics products much more than makes up for it. I had a good chat with the SA and I ended up getting these items:

Aren’t they so fun? When I first saw the packaging, I thought they looked like a mix of urban Decay and benefit Cosmetics.

Teeez Cosmetics originated from the Netherlands. apparently this is one of those brands that got wider distribution through monthly subscription boxes – when I googled Teeez Cosmetics, I get results for Ipsy and Glossybox. It’s quite innovative and takes its cues from fashion. Teeez releases 4 collections a year – the core product items remain consistent but the colours are updated for each collection. The current collection is called “Sugar Rush“. and of course, the most distinct part of the products is the colourful artwork adorning the packaging – these are developed by art students, according to the SA. Here’s what I picked up in much more detail:

Spectrum of stars Eyeshadows in Vanilla Sunbeam and Smokey rose ($24 each)

I was right away drawn to these eye shadows. all of them are duochrome finishes! and the formula has a cushy feel and smoothness like a cream product, but they’re powder products. some of the shades are quite “out there” for me but these 2 look wearable yet interesting. The packaging is also very distinct – they’re in ping pong sized golden orbs!

Beautiful Eyes flat stiff brush ($26)

I’m a total moth to flame to makeup brushes and what really drew me into this – besides the colourful deal with – was the amazing shape and the shorter than normal deal with length (I put it side by side with the MAC 239SH, and they’re nearly identical!). This will certainly stand apart in the sea of black-handled makeup brushes in my collection!

Chain of stones nail Lacquer in Melted Copper ($15)

My resolve to not purchase any nail polish has completely faded this month… this polish is beautiful! It’s a metallic copper with a scatter holographic shimmer. Hmmmmg. They also had a purple version called amazing amethyst – depending on how much I like the formula, I may pick that shade up too!

Whenever I check out a makeup counter of a brand that I’m not familiar with, I always ask these questions of the SA:
1) What are your bestsellers?
2) What are your own personal favourite items from this line?
Often, the answers to those 2 questions are quite different. I really delight in recommendations from the SAs because they use these products day in day out. The SA showed me these items as her favourites:

• sealed with a Kiss Lipduo – a matte lipstick on one end and a matching liquid lip lacquer on the other
• glitter Gossip Lash and liner – features a hybrid mascara wand with an eyeliner brush tip
I’m quite intrigued by the lipstick / gloss combo, actually! The glitter mascara topper / liner isn’t really my style, but I think it’s an innovative concept.

I’m looking forward to playing with these items and I’ll report back on my thoughts in a future post. This haul only cost me $9; I had $80 worth of Hudson’s Bay Reward points to redeem so I only paid $9 plus taxes.  In Canada, Teeez Cosmetics is available exclusively at Hudson’s Bay. have you tried anything from Teeez?

April 2016 Low-Buy AccountabilityI had anticipated April would have been a crazy month of haulage due to the Sephora VIB sale but that didn’t turn out to be the case.  I had $252.74 in my April budget to start off with. In the Sephora sale, I bought only 4 items, and I ended up…

Zoya Meadow

I received this from the beautiful polished and inspired when we met up in May! thank you again for this polish, it’s so “me”!

With the summer days winding down, I thought this was a good sunny shade to wear before the heat died down!

I’m a fan of how Zoya describes each of their nail polish shades and even offers conventional information for each:

Meadow by Zoya can be best described as a frosty, golden peach with a copper flash. This golden, flesh-toned shade is a ideal sparkling nude for warm skin tones!
Color family – Nude
Finish – Metallic
Intensity – 4 ( 1 = sheer – 5 = opaque )
Tone – Warm

This is very valuable especially for people ordering online. I wish all nail polish companies did this!

I’d say Zoy’a description is pretty accurate, although I would say the copper flash isn’t just an intermittent thing – it appears quite strongly whatsoever angles / lighting conditions.

I was concerned about streaks due to the frosty nature of the polish and the first coat was streak-city:

But it pretty much smoothed out in the second coat, phew:

The polish applied flawlessly and dried very quickly.

If you Google this polish, there are photos online where the polish looks practically pink-toned – for me, this polish leans much much more golden peached toned and in some lights, I feel it’s practically straight-up coral. It’s so pretty!

Here’s what it looks like after a full week of wear:

It looks ok if you don’t examine too closely. Sadly, this polish does chip similar to my experiences with Zoyas before – I used my typical Orly Bonder as base and Poshe as top coat. There were visible chipping / peeling on my left middle finger, and my best thumb:

The chipping occurred on day 5 so it wasn’t terrible.   Overall, I’ve discovered that Zoya polishes seem to not wear as long for me and shows suggestion wear much faster.

Here’s this week’s random object shot:

Gorilla Glue! I happened upon this in our “crap drawer” which was a goldmine for all things random. I don’t recall purchasing the Gorilla glue or if we ever used it but we have it for “just in case!”

I’m sure every household has a drawer like this where random batteries, membership cards, paperclips etc go to live. tell me what you have in your crap drawer!

Korean beauty Haul

continuing with “Hauluary” (full credit history goes to GymBagMakeup for this term!), I bought a lot of Korean beauty products – this haul consists of an on the internet order in addition to a see to a regional Korean store.

There’s a new Korean beauty kiosk inside the regional Korean grocery store that brings TonyMoly stuff among others so I had to pay a visit.

From online:

Etude House Dr. Mascara Fixer mascara base – $8 ea X2
These are replenishment for my new-found HG mascara base.  Love this stuff!

Etude home Dr. Lash Ampule as well as Serum Set – $20
Based on the positive experience of the mascara base, I decided to give their lash serum a try. This looks appealing based on the on the internet reviews.

Etude home Skin note Hydrogel Mask (Brightening Up, Deep Moisture) – $5 ea
I have yet to try these newfangled sheet masks made of hydrogel – they’re rather expensive usually ($10+ per mask) however I saw these for $5 each on the internet so I’m providing them a try.

TonyMoly Panda’s dream Brightening Eye Base – $8
Totally bought this because of the packaging as well as all the hype. who doesn’t like pandas?

Holika Holika Baby Silky Foot One shot Peeling foot mask – $7.50 ea x 3
These are a guilty enjoyment of mine!  They make the skin on my feet peel off like a snake moulting, as well as leave them as soft as a baby’s!  I’ve gotten my SO hooked too.

From the Korean beauty kiosk:

TonyMoly Pocket Bunny damp mist – $14
I’ve wished to get this for ages as well as it appears like they altered the bottle style recently. I recalled the bunny was more like a bit woman with a bow (it seems that version is exclusive to Sephora now).

Donginbi Red Ginseng gleam pillow BB #23 Calm beige – $45
This is my very first ever pillow BB! I’d never heard of the brand Donginbi however I was advised that it’s a high high quality line focused on red ginseng.  I was hesitant however this brand seemed to be truly premium as well as not as well overpriced. I’d been truly delighted before when I tried a higher end BB cream so I am providing this a try.  I like that it includes a free refill!  I likewise got a 20% discount rate on this item.

Tony Moly Eyetone Shimmer single Shadow in S04 Latte brown – $5.50
This looks so much like Shu Uemura’s eye shadows however rather inexpensive, I had to try one to see exactly how the formula is.

TonyMoly Professional Powder clean – $15
This has a nice shape as well as made from soft white goat hair.  I likewise truly like exactly how the handle as well as ferrule are matte black.

The finest part about Korean beauty hauling? Samples!

I truly enjoyed buying at the bit kiosk – the woman who helped me was knowledgeable as well as practical however not pushy. Are you a fan of Korean beauty products?  Have you tried any type of of these?

4-Step Lavender Lids

It takes just four steps to get this lavender lid look
Easy eye makeup? YES, PLEASE. This four-step lavender lid has been my go-to all week long.

It includes a layering technique, which I believe is fun as well as easy. You begin with a shimmery cream shadow base, as well as then layer as well as blend a matte powder shadow on top. The result? A shimmery base that peeks with the matte for a soft, subtle shine.

To get a similar look, you’ll need…

A shimmery cream eyeshadow, like Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Orchid. I such as this one since I can blend it quickly with my fingers.

A matte lavender powder eyeshadow. This one’s from the Ilia great nude Eyeshadow Palette.

A black liquid liner. I utilized my preferred Clinique simple liner in Black. The versatile felt suggestion makes it simple to manage the width of my lines.

A shimmery dark purple powder eyeshadow. this is likewise from the Ilia great nude Eyeshadow palette.

Four steps to lavender lids

Apply your cream shadow as a base, as well as blend the edges with a clean or finger.

Layer the matte lavender eyeshadow directly on top, then blend.

Line with the black liquid liner.

Layer the shimmery dark purple eyeshadow on top of the liquid liner with an angled brush; blend the edges.

Add your preferred brow product as well as mascara, if you’d like, then get prepared to shine!

1. shimmery purple cream shadow, 2. matte lavender powder shadow, 3. black liquid liner, 4. shimmery dark purple eyeshadow
1. Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Orchid, 2. Ilia Teardrop (from the great nude Palette), 3. Clinique quite simple liner in Black, 4. Ilia Unravel Eyeshadow
The lip is Lila B. lip oil in b. elegant

Product photography

Taking good photos for this blog has been a challenge for me because day one. There just isn’t enough space to set up big fancy backdrops and we don’t receive adequate natural light in our condo.   I set out to examine my options for a small photo studio and came across some diy lightboxes like this:

My main issue with this type of set up is that the box isn’t collapsible so it would occupy valuable space in the condo.  Also, I didn’t want to be restricted by the dimension of a box if I wished to spread out the products for a photo.

I was searching for an inexpensive service that could be easily put away.  First up, the light source.  I chose a clamp style desk lamp would work, and I hit jackpot at the first place I checked, Staples – I purchased the Tensor Vision Max lamp:

$40. The main selling feature for me was that it offers balanced daylight. It even has a built-in magnifying glass.
Second, I hit up the fabric store and found a length of white broadcloth on clearance for $2.  Score.  I played around with the set-up and came up with this:

How did I take this picture if my video camera was in the shot? (Answer: cellphone)
It’s just 2 chairs dealing with each other, one with the white fabric draped over the chair back, and the lamp is clamped onto the chair seat.  The other chair holds the video camera (just a easy point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS) which is on a  timer.  The video camera is sitting on a bit bendy “tripod” that I’ve had for ages – I purchased it off ebay for no much more than $5. This set up is still being finessed, because I discovered that when taking photos of products with highly reflective surfaces, it was efficiently mirroring the background which was really distracting:

Oh hi chair, hi camera, hi tripod, I didn’t see you there.
Whereas this is much more like what I was hoping for:

This is a lie!
I read up on how to photograph reflective objects but the suggestions seem really complicated for the casual “photographer” like me – hopefully I don’t own a lot of cosmetics with shiny packaging!  I think I may examine with getting a 2nd white drop fabric to hide the other chair, and maybe a couple of foamcore boards to offer much more structure. hopefully with a better set up, I’ll be able to start doing much more product photos and makeup swatches.  Now I’m also looking into how to guarantee accurate and consistent representation of the product and swatch colours… (secretly, I delight in doing these kinds of nerdy things).  I hope this set up will produce better photos!
